Pioneer resident of Brooklyn dies at age of 94
Mrs. Josephine Nelson of Brooklyn died at 11:45 p.m. Thursday at the age of 94.
She was a lifelong resident of the Brooklyn area and was a member of the Brooklyn Baptist Church.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church with burial in the community cemetery [Brooklyn Cemetery]. Hulett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Kate Gibson of Vicksburg and Mrs. E.A. Blanks, Mrs. C.R. Maxwell and Mrs. Henry Robertson, all of Brooklyn; a son, Bill, of Brooklyn; two brothers, W.A. Fillingame of Lakeside, CA; a sister, Mrs. E.A. Danley of Collins; 29 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Otho L. Nelson, 48, of Brooklyn, who died at his home Wednesday night after a long illness, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Brooklyn Baptist Church. Rev. CS. Moulder will officiate assisted by S.C. Ray, educational director of Main Street Baptist Church here. Burial will follow in the Brooklyn Cemetery.
Mr. Nelson formerly resided at 119 W. Fourth St. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. W.S. Nelsonof Brooklyn; five daughters, Mrs. R.W. Grames, Mrs. A.R. Butler and Miss. Betty Nelson of Hattiesburg, Mrs. H.H. Duffey of Norman, OK, and Miss. LaNell Nelson of Oklahoma City, OK; two sons, Bill and Otho L. Nelson, Jr.; four sisters, Mrs. E.A. Blanks of Hattiesburg, Mrs. L.E. Gibson of Vicksburg, Mrs. C.R. Maxwell and Mrs. H.L. Roberson of Brooklyn; and one brother, W.A. Nelson of Brooklyn.
The body will remain at the Hulett Funeral Home here until time for services.
Bobby Joe Nowell, 72, of Brooklyn, died April 30, 2015, at Wesley Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, May 4, 2015, at First Baptist Church of Brooklyn followed by burial in Brooklyn Cemetery.
Mr. Nowell was the owner of a small engine repair shop in Brooklyn for 20 years where he was known as the “Lawnmower Man” and “Rabbit Man”. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Brooklyn and served National Guard for six years.
James David O'Neal, 86, died Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Patrick Rest Home in Handsboro where he had been confined for two months. He had been ill for over a year.
Mr. O'Neal and his family moved to Gulfport from Hattiesburg in 1929. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lucille O'Nel, Gulfport, and the following children; Mrs. Houston Tew, Mrs. Mark Fox, J.D. O'Neal Jr., and Louis O'Neal, all of Gulfport; Mrs. Alex Blackwell and Paul O'Neal, both of Hammond, LA; Mrs. Paul Dean, of Seattle, WA; S.D. O'Neal of Springfield, IL; Mrs. Curtman E. Wilkinson of Folsom, CA; Marvin O'Neal of Baton Rouge, LA; Mrs. Lloyd Lee of Hattiesburg; Mrs. Jerome Pons of New Orleans; 24 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Carterville Church, east of Hattiesburg, Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Oscar Smith will officiate and burial will be in Carter Cemetery.
CARNES --- Mr. Willard O'Neal, 81, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, in Wiggins.
Mr. O'Neal was a retired train operator for International Paper Company in Wiggins and was a Baptist.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Moore Funeral Home in Wiggins. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Carnes Cemetery.

Mr. A.T. 'Ty' Pearce, 85, of Hattiesburg died Sunday, November 9, 2008 at his residence.
Mr Pearce was a retired principle in the Public School System and an investigator with MS Public Service Commission. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Brooklyn and a US Army World War II veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Gelling Pearce of Hattiesburg; 2 sons, Carl Pearce of Petal, Tyrus Pearce of O'Berling, LA; 3 daughters, Theda Elizabeth Sims of Hattiesburg, Ellen Moree Kayaen of Pass Christian, Sue Motes-Conners of Cashmere, WA; 3 sisters, Theda Berry of Magee, Ellen Walker and Patty Williams of Gulfport; a brother, Joe Pearce of Grandbury Texas; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 5 - 8 p m Tuesday, Nov 11, 2008 at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg. The body will lie instate at 12:00 noon, Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Brooklyn. Services will be held at 1 p m, Wednesday, Nov 12, 2008 at First Baptist Church of Brooklyn. Burial in Brooklyn Cemetery.

BROOKLYN - Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Moore Funeral Home in Wiggins for Oneida Pearce, 84, of Brooklyn, who died May 4, 2009, at Forrest General Hospital. Burial is in Brooklyn Cemetery.
Mrs. Pearce was a homemaker and member of Brooklyn United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Pearce.
Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Gerhardt of Satsuma, Ala.; three sons, Lowell Pearce of Houston, Texas, Richard Pearce of Brooklyn and Joe Pearce of Harvest, Ala.; a sister, Orazelle Evans of Brooklyn; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Barbara Peel, 86, of Petal, MS, was welcomed into the kingdom of heaven on April 27, 2017.
Services will be Monday, May 1, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home in Petal followed by burial in Brooklyn Cemetery.
Mrs. Peel was a graduate from Wiggins High School as valedictorian in 1949 and graduated from William Carey University in 1970. She was a retired nurse, teacher and a member of Lynn Ray Road Baptist Church. She trained as a nurse at Baptist Hospital in Jackson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Peel and her mother, Susie Rhodes.
She will be forever cherished by her children, George (Candis) Wood of Carnes, Randi (Joe) Watts of Petal, David (Susie) Peel of Carnes, Mona Locke of Brooklyn and Sara Reid of Petal; eleven grandchildren and twenty great- grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday, May 1, 2017 from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home in Petal.

PEARL - Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Brooklyn Cemetery for Lottie Evans Perkins, 79, of Pearl, who died June 25, 2006, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson.
Mrs. Perkins was a homemaker and member of Reorganized Church of Latter-day Saints in Jackson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Burl D. Perkins.
Survivors include three sons, Douglas M. Perkins and William G. Perkins, both of Pearl, and Richard S. Perkins of Raymond; six sisters, Doris Lackey, Gail Burch and Etta Johnson, all of Brewton, Ala., Yvonne Harrell of Pace, Fla., Viola Stancil of Toney, Ala., and Audrey Minor of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother, Donald R. Evans of Brewton; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

BROOKLYN - Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Lake Side Baptist Church for Ethel A. Pettis, 82, of Brooklyn, who died Jan. 28, 2010, at Buckingham Nursing Home in New Jersey. Burial is in Brooklyn.
Mrs. Pettis was a homemaker and member of Grace Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Eldridge Pettis of Linden, Ala., Tom Pettis of Ridgefield, N. J., and Tim Pettis of Brooklyn; five daughters, Diana Carrero of Allentown, N. J., Karen Simon of Brooklyn, Susan Rutledge of Brooklyn, Cathy Gram Clark of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Debbie Hornick of Brooklyn; and 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldridge Pettis.

Victoria "Vicki" F. Pevsner, 68, died April 25, 2017, in San Diego, CA. Visitation will be Friday, May 5, 2017, from 12 p.m. until the service at 1:30 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg followed by burial in B'Nai Israel Cemetery.
Vickie was born June 13, 1948 in Chicago, IL to Annie H. Logan and Irvin (Cohen) Collins, both of whom preceded her in death. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, James Fernicola and Sol Pevsner; maternal grandparents, Lona and Wilson Hodge; paternal grandparents, Lilly and Harry Cohen; and a brother, Gordan Logan.
She is survived by two sisters, Melanie Gray Drummond (husband, Ken and daughter, Olivia) of San Antonio, TX and Erika Collins of San Diego, CA; her only child, Kathryn Jane Fernicola of San Diego; and her granddaughters who were more precious to her than life, Lona Marie Dunlap and Madelynn Jane Dunlap, both of San Diego.
Vicki attended Sandersville High and JCJC. She graduated from MSU with a Bachelors in Social Work and went on to receive her Masters in Social Work from LSU. Vicki practiced as a clinical social worker and administrator for over 40 years. She received adjunct faculty appointment at the Yale School of Medicine in the departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatric/Addiction. From 1988 to 2006 she served as Director of Pine Grove Recovery Center along with a position as Vice President at Forrest General Hospital.

Mrs. S.L. Pierce, 61, Dies At Residence In Macedonia
Obsequies for Mrs. S.L. Pierce, 61, who died at her home in the Macedonia community last night at 10 o'clock, were conducted this afternoon at 3 o'clock at Barlow Cemetery, near Macedonia, with the Reverend A.C. Parker, pastor of Petal-Harvey Baptist Church officiating.
Interment was in Barlow Cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, three sons; I.V. Pierce of Clarksdale; W.K. and W.D. of Macedonia; three daughters, Mrs. Gertrude McLemore of McLaurin; Miss. Maude Pierce of Macedonia; Mrs. Ida Herrington of Macedonia; two brothers, Lon Easterling of MAcedonia and I.B. Easterling of Petal, and two sisters, MRs. Ella Bradley of Hattiesburg and Mrs. J. McCardle of Azurea, CA.
Robert D. Pierce, 80, of Petal passed away on July 22, 2019 at Lamar Health and Rehab. Visitation will be Thursday, July 25, 2019 at Moore Funeral Home in Petal from 9:30 A.M. until service at 11:30 A.M. followed by burial in Barlow Cemetery of the Macedonia community.
Mr. Pierce was of the Baptist faith. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a member of the Petal School Board, where he served as president.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur Dewitt and Iris Nicholson Pierce.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Pierce Fitzgerald of Petal; his two sons, Robert D. Pierce, II (Kristi) of Tuscaloosa, AL. and Jason Ryan Pierce of Colfax, IL; his brother, Jerry W. Pierce of Petal; his sister, Mary Pierce O'Neal (Jim) of Petal; seven grandchildren, Jade Fitzgerald, Jacob Fitzgerald, Sarah Pierce, Drew Pierce, Ella Pierce, Jack Pierce, and Isabelle Pierce; two step-daughters, Donna Hawkins and Tracy Kitchens both of Collins; three nephews, Greg Pierce, Kenny Pierce, and Jon O'Neal; and a host of cousins and friends.
